Penn State bowl projections heading into Week 4

After a 3-0 start to the season following its dominant performance at Auburn in week 3, Penn State’s bowl outlook looks incredibly more promising across the board according to the latest bowl projections.

At this stage it is already looking like New Years Six or bust for the Nittany Lions, but a berth in the College Football Playoff is still a tad out of reach entering Week 4.

After weeks of varying opinions on Penn State’s eventual bowl destination, there is much more agreement from the bowl projectors on where Penn State is on track to be heading, so it may not be too early to start checking out the latest flight deals on a ticket to Miami.

Here is a quick glance at the latest bowl projections from national media outlets after Week 3.

247Sports (Brad Crawford): Orange Bowl vs. Clemson The bowl projections from Brad Crawford of 247Sports move Penn State up from the Citrus Bowl to the Orange Bowl this week.

247Sports (Brad Crawford): Orange Bowl vs. Clemson And they will face the ACC champion Clemson Tigers, who Crawford has just missing the College Football Playoff. Get used to this Orange Bowl projection, as it is the common theme of the week.

The Action Network (Brett McMurphy): Rose Bowl vs. USC Before you get too carried away with the idea of Penn State heading to the Rose Bowl, it is worth mentioning Brett McMurphy doesn’t necessarily have Penn State winning the Big Ten to get there.

The Action Network (Brett McMurphy): Rose Bowl vs. USC Instead, McMurphy is calling for an all-SEC vs Big Ten College Football Playoff with both Ohio State and Michigan going to the playoff to battle Alabama and Georgia, respectively.

The Action Network (Brett McMurphy): Rose Bowl vs. USC That leaves the Big Ten’s spot in the Rose Bowl for the taking, and Penn State is the team most likely to get there according to McMurphy. USC would be the Pac-12 champion in this particular scenario.

(Jerry Palm): Orange Bowl vs. Clemson Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com moved Penn State into the Orange Bowl in his projections a week ago and he keeps them there this week. It’s a projection that could hold firm until Ohio State, Michigan, or Penn State loses the way this season is going.

College Football News: Orange Bowl vs. Clemson Perhaps the biggest jump in the weekly bowl projections comes from College Football News. A week ago, CFN had Penn State playing in the ReliaQuest Bowl, the new name for the Outback Bowl.

College Football News: Orange Bowl vs. Clemson Now it joins the consensus in projecting Penn State to the Orange Bowl to face the ACC champions.

ESPN (Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach): Orange Bowl vs. Clemson ESPN’s two bowl predictors have the same line of thinking, which is echoed by many bowl projections.

ESPN (Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach): Orange Bowl vs. Clemson Both have Ohio State in the College Football Playoff and Michigan going to the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten representative. But the Orange Bowl gets Penn State in these projections as well.

Sports Illustrated (Richard Johnson): Cotton Bowl vs. Tulane Sports Illustrated goes slightly against the grain with the Cotton Bowl projection for Penn State.

And interestingly, Richard Johnson has Penn State facing Tulane out of the AAC in the spot as the highest-ranked Group of 5 conference champion.

There is a wide range of opinions on who the G5 representative will be in the New Years Six this year among the projections with Cincinnati and Appalachian State each still in the running as well.

Penn State’s last visit to the Cotton Bowl certainly went well against an AAC champion.
