The Notre Dame football team looked to have a weakness at wide receiver heading into fall practice,
but Tobias Merriweather is changing that narrative.
During the 2021 college football season, the Notre Dame football team saw true freshman wideout Lorenzo Styles Jr. explode at the end of the year.
He capped off a terrific first season in South Bend by dominating the Fiesta Bowl, cementing his spot as WR1 for the 2022 campaign.
Now, Styles will be tasked with bringing along another true freshman, Tobias Merriweather.
Since arriving on campus, Merriweather has been impressive, to say the least, and many believe he is going to be a special player for the Irish.
In a position group that was seen as a true question mark going into the summer months,
the play of Merriweather could turn it into a strength in 2022, and beyond.
Merriweather was the only commit from the 2022 recruiting class that the Irish were able to bring in,
and based on early returns, he may have been the only one they needed.
Overall, the wide receiver group suddenly looks like a strength for the Irish, as it is a great blend of veterans and first or second-year players.
Styles Jr. got most of the run last season, but both Deion Colzie and Jayden Thomas are two true sophomores who could impress in a big way in 2022.
Veterans Avery Davis and Braden Lenzy are healthy and ready to lead this young group,
and in a passing game that features the best tight end in the country,
the Irish could cause teams fits on the outside with sudden depth at wideout.
as Tommy Rees and Marcus Freeman have yet to name a starter a few weeks ahead of the Ohio State game.
The likelihood is that it will be Tyler Buchner, and after shining as a true freshman last year, maybe he can help Merriweather along in Year 2.
