Yankees have strong interest in Alex Bregman: report
As the Yankees look to bolster their offense after losing Juan Soto to the Mets, they have "real" interest in free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
The Astros have been trying to retain Bregman, who has spent all nine seasons of his big league career with Houston.
In addition to Bregman, the Yanks have been connected to Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker, who is available via trade, and free agent first baseman Christian Walker.
Bregman, who has never struck out more than 97 times in a season and who has been one of the best hitters in the game for nearly a decade, would be a strong fit for New York on both sides of the ball.
He had a relatively down season in 2024, with a 118 OPS+ and the lowest OBP since his rookie season, but was still productive as he slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 30 doubles in 145 games.
In addition to the Yankees and Astros, the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, and Phillies have also been linked to Bregman.
With Soto out of the picture, the Yanks are set up well to spread the money that would've been owed to him around.
They started to do that on Tuesday night, when they inked left-handed pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year deal for $218 million.
It's expected that they'll address the offense next.
